SIM or eSIM in Bali: What to Check Before You Buy

An eSIM is not automatically effortless, and a local physical SIM is not automatically the cheapest option. Choose around what you need on arrival: maps and messages, or a laptop connection for work too.

Five checks before paying

• Is your exact device eSIM-compatible and unlocked?
• Is the plan data-only, or does it include a local number, calls and SMS?
• Does data stop or slow down after the allowance is used?
• Is tethering allowed, and under what limits?
• Does validity start on purchase, installation or first local connection?

Set up ahead or get help in person

An eSIM can suit travellers who are comfortable installing it before departure. Check the app or manual-installation option if the QR code is on the same phone. Test before leaving the airport

Turn Wi-Fi off briefly. Load a map, send a message to the property and sign into your ride app. If you keep your home SIM active, check its roaming settings and charges. Do not remove a line you still need for verification texts.

Keep a fallback

Save the accommodation address and transfer contact offline. If an eSIM fails, check the provider’s recovery steps before deleting it: reinstalling or reissuing can have restrictions. Avoid learning those rules while a driver is waiting.
